11 names recommended for the post of new Director General of Police.

Bhubaneswar: The process for appointing the next Director General of Police (DGP) of Odisha has begun. In this connection, the state government has recommended the names of 11 IPS officers from the 1990 to 1996 batches to the UPSC. Out of these, the UPSC will recommend three names, and the government will finalize one among them. It is noteworthy that the tenure of Odisha DGP and 1990-batch IPS officer Yogesh Bahadur Khurania will end on August 16 this year. He had assumed charge on August 16, 2024. The search for a new police chief has started for the post that is set to fall vacant.

The government has recommended the names of Fire Services DG Sudhanshu Sarangi (1990), Prisons DG Sushant Kumar Nath (1993), Intelligence Director R.P. Koche (1993), Additional DG of Anti-Naxal Operations Sanjeeb Kumar Panda (1994), Vigilance Director Yashwant Kumar Jethwa (1994), Special Resident Commissioner Ritu Arora (1995), DG of Police Modernization Soumendra Kumar Priyadarshi (1995), SFSL Director Dr. Santosh Bala (1995), CISF Additional Director General Padmakar S. Ranpise (1995), Additional DG of Railways and Coastal Security Arun Bothra (1996), and IB (Headquarters), Ministry of Home Affairs Additional DG Sunita Kakran (1996) to the UPSC. From these, three names will be shortlisted and sent to the state government, which will then select one person for the post of the new DGP.

At present, the government is under pressure over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state, especially due to a series of organized crime incidents. The state government is facing criticism because of the functioning of the police. In the context of reviewing the law and order situation following the beating death of Soumya Ranjan Swain by some people in Balianta, the Chief Minister had openly expressed dissatisfaction with DGP Khurania. In such a situation, while appointing the new head of the police department, the state government is expected to consider all aspects before taking a decision.
